What leaves your phone when you run an online lookup

When you choose to run an online lookup, your phone may send — temporarily, for processing only — unredacted photos or camera scenes, the people visible in them, and the metadata available with them (for example capture time, orientation, or location if your camera stores it) to third-party search and AI suppliers that we do not name in the app. They use this material for three purposes only:

• Recognition — a reverse face search across publicly available web pages.
• Visual geolocation — estimating where a scene was taken from what is visible in it.
• Research — gathering and citing public information linked to the people found.

Temporary images are deleted after processing. Public results returned by suppliers may be retained anonymously so that repeat searches for the same public face do not repeat a paid supplier search.

What never leaves your phone

Your People Library — the people you save, their face samples, labels, notes, encounter history — and the face templates your phone computes for local matching stay on your phone. They are excluded from cloud backup and are never uploaded.

Your responsibility for the camera

You may connect a camera, glasses, doorbell, photo, or album only if you are authorized to use that source in the place where you use it. Laws on recording, biometric processing, and notice to the people you record differ by country and region. By enabling a source you attest that you are authorized to use it and that you accept responsibility for lawful use. The app records this attestation with the source, the version of this notice, the time, and a signature from your device.

Revoking your authorization in the app disables that source immediately, closes any active stream, and discards pending frames before anything is uploaded.

Potential minors

If the on-device check cannot confirm that a person is an adult, no online search runs until you confirm, for that face, that you are authorized to run the search and accept responsibility for proceeding.

Results are evidence, not proof

A similarity score describes how much a public photo resembles the face in your camera. It is never confirmation of identity, and no result — including “nothing found” — is a statement about anyone's safety, character, or criminal history. Public records, allegations, and news are shown with their source and status; an arrest record or mugshot is not proof of guilt.
